This final term I will be student teaching at Crocus Plains, teaching senior 1-4 Self Directed Learning. This will be a new experience and a totally different classroom dynamic. I am very excited to try something new. On fridays in this class my co-operating teaching has discussion time with the students, she usually starts out discussion with a youtube video. I am beginning to get prepared for my time there, and I am looking for videos that I can use to get discussion started with my students.
Help!
I am hoping that my fellow classmates will help me out and give me some suggestions of good videos that I can use to get discussion going! Please give me any suggestions in my comments below. I would appreciate the help! Here is one video that could be interesting for discussion, a news report 1981 about the internet. It is amazing how much has changed in the past 33 years. Who knew this internet thing would ever catch on!
I know what you mean, its been pretty crazy how much time has flown by these two years! It's exciting to finally be graduating and it'll be nice to have our own classroom when we find jobs.
ReplyDeleteI think it's good that your CT is using youtube videos to start their discussion period, especially when it comes to students who are struggling in their courses. They cater to auditory and visual learners and students who may struggle with reading, so showing videos makes it easier to comprehend the material. They also can be short and to the point or longer in duration but videos these days can be so stimulating that maintaining focus for an extended period of time isn't an issue.
One of my old CT's use to start off each class by showing a motivational video. He used it as a signal that class was going to start and it also worked as a way to calm the students down because they were so interested in what he was presenting. That being said, I have a couple motivational videos that I used during my student teaching placement so if you need any videos of that variety just let me know!
Thanks Steve! That sounds great, could you attach a link to your favourite videos that could start some discussion in my comments.
DeleteHey Sam!
ReplyDeleteThat internet video is crazy. Its cool that we have the internet so that we can go back in time via YouTube to watch videos from the 80s (:o)
As far as interesting videos go, have you seen any of the Vsauce videos? They are really, pretty cool. They're based on factual information about a WIDE variety of interesting topics, such as "The world's shortest poem," "what does human taste like?," "why are bad words bad?," "why do we get bored?," etc. Pretty neat stuff. I watched the one on the world's shortest poem in my grade 8 class last placement. The videos are really multi-faceted, funny, and engaging.
Good luck in your hunt :)
Hey Sam,
ReplyDeleteI don't know of any videos but I will keep my eyes open for something good!
What will your role be in self-directed learning? Do you still teach them content or do you just help the students if they have questions? Either way, it sounds like fun!
Hey Sam!
ReplyDeleteYes the excitement of graduation is in full swing. In agreement with Brittani, Vsauce videos are amazing, they always manage to take a seemingly easy statement and explore the basis, framework, and the philosophical connotations within the statement. Definitely engaging. Also Ted Talk videos can be incredibly engaging, depending on which area of interest. Good Luck!
